Review: Beyoncé (feat. Jay-Z) - Deja Vu28 August, 2006 — Stuart Brown

Perrenial funk-pot Beyoncé Knowles is back with prior collaborator Jay-Z for 'Deja-Vu', first single from the album 'B'Day'. It is as good as the last time these two worked together in 'Crazy in Love'?

beyonce deja vu cover

The song starts funky and gets funkier - from the first introduction of the bassline to the full-on dance/lyric combo of the chorus, this is near 100 proof funk. And it doesn't get much funkier than that.

Jay-Z's lyrics are good, but perhaps not as good as they could be when compared to Beyoncés performance. Beyoncé can certainly sing, and she's in her usual strong style. The dancing is a little over-the-top though - it somehow seems like she's trying too hard!

Overall summary

A great slice of funky R&B, comparable to 'Crazy in Love' and a great late-summer hit.
