Review: Fergie- London Bridge14 September, 2006 — Stuart Brown

Fergie (aka Stacy Ferguson from the Black Eyed Peas) is trying her hand at a solo career with the launch of her first solo single, London Bridge. Taken from the album 'The Dutchess', it's a fairly standard chunky R&B song, with a catchy lyric and gratuitous swearing (in the dirty version, at least). But what the devil is a 'London bridge'?

fergie london bridge

A bit of research on the internet, and I'm now informed that in this particular case 'London Bridge' refers to Fergie's lower undergarments, and the fact that 'they wanna go down' 'everytime you come around' refers to her amorous interest in a particular chap.

Interesting notion to base a song around, but it's suitably gimmicky - gimmicky enough, in fact, to make this single the second highest jump in the history of the US Billboard chart - from 84 to number 5. Chart performance so far in the UK is more understated - it has entered at 25, and time will yet tell if it will endure greater success.
