Review: Jealousy - Lucy14 September, 2006 — Stuart Brown

Now here's a track that can't quite make up what genre it should be in. Between the many varied remixes and edits, this ranges from jangly soft-pop rock to more uptempo funky house. What does remain between them, however, is the insistent and slightly jarring vocal - 'Luceeeeeeeee!'

jealousy lucy

With big names behind the remixes, Mani Hoffman on the lyrics (of Supermen Lovers fame), a Human League riff thrown in for good measure, you'd think they'd be onto a winner here. The only trouble is - and it's almost unescapable - is the sheer mediocrity of the song.

Despite all the hard work that's gone into the production, the lyrics, the vocals, the simple basic truth is that you can't polish muck. That might be overstating things somewhat - the song's not that bad - but it's like they're trying too hard, on a song and melody that just isn't worth it.

So, move along then, nothing to see here. Perhaps 'Jealousy' (awful name for a group, by the way) will fare better in their next outing. Here's hoping it won't succumb to mediocrity.

Overall summary

Mediocrity embodied. You won't remember this song ever existed in a month's time.
