Up&coming: Julius Martov and The Sexy Mistakes3 January, 2007 — Hazel Gardner

Demo material

Julius Martov and The Sexy Mistakes are a 5-piece electro/pop/rock band from the North West of England, who count The Fall among their influences.

Having been told these recordings were made live in a band member's living room, and sounded 'a bit rough', I was pleasantly surprised by how un-rough it actually sounds.

These demo songs are catchy and simple with really decent hooks, and it works well. The vocal style of half spoken/half sung is effective- it could so easily sound awful, but doesn't- as is the combination of electronic sounds with a more raw guitar line over the top. In particular, High Five is a song, which if given half a chance, could probably fill a dancefloor. In the band's own words, it's "a song about being rubbish and not caring because you have fun". Any lyricist who includes the word 'rascal' is alright by me.

If you're into your electro, but like a rockier edge, check these guys out. Based on this demo material, they have a good sound, songs you'll tap your feet to, and with any luck a bright future.

On Thursday 4th January, Julius Martov and The Sexy Mistakes are playing at the NIght and Day Cafe, Manchester, doors 8pm. If you're not lucky enough to live in Manchester, go to myspace.com/thesexymistakes to check out their sound.
