Tennessee family act Kings of Leon have struck into the UK charts at #13 - the highest new entry this week - with the second single from their album 'Because of the Times'. Perhaps suitably so, Fans is a tribute to the followers of the band in the UK - they have had a traditionally warmer reception here than in their homeland.
The song, then, is upbeat, pleasant and a feel-good yet laid-back summer hit. The slightly rocking edge to the strained lyrics and guitar licks remove any saccharin taste from the sentiment - although I remain convinced that the lead singer, Caleb Followill, is in the process of losing his voice during the song. Perhaps it's their signature style.
For all the pleasantness and soft uplifting verses, though, there's little else to it - no grittiness, no subversion, no edge - this puts it firmly in the field of M.O.R. inoffensive rock. Not that that's a bad thing - enjoy this while it's being played, for you might forget it soon after.
Great feel good summer rock song, nicely upbeat, pleasant, but otherwise not noteworthy.

What next?More by Kings of Leon? More reviews? More rock, or indie?
