You may not have heard of the first lady of Grime, Lady Sovereign. She's not been around for very long yet - her first studio album, Public Warning, has been out since October last year, and new single, Love Me or Hate Me, is due out later in January. But already she's created quite a stir, and done her part in the burgeoning 'grime' scene.

If you're familiar with the Ordinary Boys '9 to 5', you may be surprised to know that the original debuted way back in 2005 as Lady Sovereign's second single. The original is a far cry from the ordinary lyrics from the Ordinary Boys - a far more pure slice of indolence and rebellion.
Lady Sovereign's vocal style is unique, to say the least - at least in the music charts. Sounding like something straight out a city centre comprehensive high school, there's a very true and real sound. It might be gritty, even abrasive to some ears, but I have a confession to make: I love it.
The very essence of rebellion, simplistic but effective tracks, with lyrics stickier than a wad of chewed gum, and a selection of tracks which have already found success in other places, means that this album is a smashing debut which is fresh beyond all doubt.
Singles '9 to 5', 'Random', 'Hoodie' and the new single 'Love Me Or Hate Me' are all good, and there are a couple of other gems on there - 'Those Were The Days' and 'Tango' deserve a mention.
The only problem may just be the caustic lyrics and inimitable attitude which may not sit well with everyone. But in Lady Sovereign's own words, 'Fuck you'.

What next?More by Lady Sovereign? More album reviews? More grime, or pop?
