Review: Mark Ronson & Amy Winehouse - Valerie23 October, 2007 — Kate Ingham

from the album Version / Back to Black (Deluxe Edition)

Mark Ronson Amy Winehouse Valerie

Mark Ronson is either incredibly lucky or is incredibly shrewd. The release of this Zutons Cover, at a time where Amy Winehouse is in the media for taking enough drugs and booze to incapitate a concrete elephant more or less guarantees him a place in the top ten.

It is a rare cover version which surpasses the orginal, and I'm incredibly happy to say that this song passes the standard.

Winehouse's soulful vocals, mixed with Ronson's keenness for strings and kick-ass brass sections turns a once lacklustre indie song into a sumptuous three and a half minutes worth of pop which wouldn't have seemed out of place forty years ago.

This song redeems Ronson for his mediocre previous single, and make us all hope that Amy will kick the drugs, get her hair sorted out and hotfoot it back into the studio sharpish.

What next?More by Mark Ronson? More reviews? More pop?
