Review: Mika - Grace Kelly31 December, 2006 — Hazel Gardner

Released 15th Jan 2007, Label: Casablanca

One listen to this slice of camp and catchy pop music and you'll agree that Mika is going to be a big hit in 2007. Skipping along happily like the love-child of Freddie Mercury and the Scissor Sisters, Grace Kelly is about identity and frustration with lack of acceptance, with lyrics such as "I try to be like Grace Kelly, But all her looks were too sad, So I tried a little Freddie, I've gone identity mad!"

This is 3 minutes 11 seconds of pure pop genius. Somewhat silly, and definite end-of-night-drunk-dancing material, what is most striking about this track is Mika's fabulous Mercuryesque voice which, during the chorus, reaches an unashamedly camp falsetto. This is what pop music should be about; talented writing, originality and a damn catchy tune. Hopefully this will give the charts a good kick up the backside in the new year.

"Kerching!"
