Review: This Old Town, Paul Weller and Graham Coxon2 September, 2007 — Geoff Hickman

This Old Town, Paul Weller and Graham Coxon

Enough with the sensitive "croon my way into your pants" singer/songwriters. Most of us are just yearning for a proper rock tune.

You know the type of song I'm talking about right? The kind that gets you all amped up and ready to thump a couple of Everton supporters? The new Weller/Coxon single fits the bill nicely.

'This Old Town' may not do much to impress you if aren't already fans of Paul Weller's or Graham Coxon's solo work. But for those of us who are, this song represents a Holy union. Weller is as relevent as ever, and Coxon just can't do anything wrong, each solo release trumping the last. The song itself is sleazy and epic at the same time. Coxon sings most of the song, but when Weller joins in during the chorus complete with Sex Pistols-esque guitar, it's magical. I myself, have cranked this up, and jumped up and down on the bed while playing air guitar several times already. The bed ain't none too happy because I'm a bigger fella, but screw him, I'm the boss in that room.

It's easy for a reviewer like me to pull apart a song and try to figure out why it works. But in the end, it doesn't matter. All that matters is that a song stirs up as many wonderfully raw emotions as possible. And for that reason, 'This Old Town' is nearly perfect.

Overall

What next?More by Paul Weller and Graham Coxon? More reviews? More rock?
